A pretty amazing setlist,
very jammy show. Too bad about the lack of track info on a stream-only recording.

Never saw them live
All I can say is I wish I had been there, but when this happened I was but a wee babe. I'm just thankful that I can listen to it 43 years later. My kids don't understand it. Not a lot of folk do. I try to explain, but ya know, you're either on the bus or off. Thank you Charlie Miller

what a show ... !
A brilliant show, as is well known. A real gem from start to finish. It has flaws (very minor and barely worth mentioning), but the whole is the brain-membrane-riveting sounds of '69 Dead. The reviewer down below had it right ... the Black Peter is great. And yet, don't pass up the Mason's Children ... it'll shrivel your conceptions of what has come before (well, maybe i still have a preference for the 69-12-28 version). The Dark Star, while minutely flawed, crackles along the spine. It's a cool show.

Uncle John!
On the cusp of 1970 comes what is (IMHO) the finest, sweetest version of UNCLE JOHN'S BAND. What you are treated to is an early exploration of Jerry's lead. An exploration that is every bit as brilliant as the one he settled on for the recording. If you, like me, love this song but could never quite find that all-time perfect version, check this out. Thir voices hit the mark perfectly. The only MINOR complaint one might make is that the vocals were recorded at tad hot and present minor distorion when pushed to the max in the end.

I was at this show!
I just got a call from a friend wishing me a Happy New year and he reminded me about us going to this show 40 years ago! I did a search for it and found this sirte.... freakin amazing!
The show opened with Jane Curtain of Saturday Night Live fame way before she broke onto the scene nationally doing some wicked funny stand up comedy and Livingston Taylor (James's little bro)doing some bits of stand up between sets... I was tripping my brains out on Blue Barrel acid and he kept inhaling helium from a balloon and speaking which was way freakish and annoying at the time but funny in retrospect haha...
They played one of the most amazing moving rocking life changing shows till 4AM and I can remember everything from the exploding tie-dye paint splatter pulsating walls light show to the amazing vibe that only the Dead can create like it was yesterday! This is the Dead at their finest!
Rock on!

JustAFloatingSage... my prayers are with you
This is not what I came to the IA site for this morning but I just have to say the eminent loss of a fellow Deadhead hit me right in the gut.
I know that from the second we arrive we are all on borrowed time but it doesn't make it any easier.
The one thing that we all have (us Deadheads I mean)is the music and the memories. Who knows, we might have bumped into one and other at a show so many years ago. I really doesn't matter because I know that you get it and you know that here are thousands of us here wishing you peace and safe passage.
I hope that you have made arrangements to have some of your favorite music played to go meet with Jerry and Pigpen. Send them my love as I send mine to you.
I haven't even listened to the show yet so I can't review it.

5 stars for the show to maintain current rating.
I have it somewhere (sorry to be so casual) but, against the backdrop of the previous mail, it pales into insignificance.

Sources
Between the two 12.30.69 sources I believe this one is the best choice. After I made that conclusion I noticed Charlie Miller worked on it and that cemented my decision.
Great show. One of the choices for the "Grateful Grok-In 12/30/06." See post:

DOWNLOAD THIS NOW! HURRY! DO IT!
What if some big-time rock band that had been around for 40 years had allowed fans to record shows, including soundboard patches, and then suddenly one day the band has been decimated by death and dissent but realizes there's money to be made in downloads of soundboards and PULLS ALL THE SOUNDBOARDS. A scary scenario, eh?
Well, what if, by some miracle, an A+ soundboard got overlooked because it was kind of hidden in the shadow of 12-31-69, a classic New Year's Eve show. But what if this show had killer versions of New Speedway Boogie and Black Peter, and a great second set from beginning to end, including a nice 20-minute Dark Star > Alligator > Drums > The Eleven > well, keep on reading the setlist. It just gets better.
So, what are you waiting for? DL this now, before it's discovered and yanked like all the other boards! And, yeah, be sure and share it with your fellow traders!
Peace,
Jac in Tucson
